Ponte Stirone
Stirone Bridge
Seismic retrofit
- Engineering
Seismic vulnerability assessment of an arched railway bridge with five concrete spans slightly oblique, on Stirone torrent, in Fidenza municipality, in Parma district.
The railway bridge has a total length of 80 m, with spans and pylons in concrete coated with bricks.
Calculations and seismic vulnerability analysis have been made on the arched railway concrete bridge on Stirone torrent, of the railway line Bologna-Milano, in order to formulate the opinion about the seismic vulnerability assessment Ante Operam thereof.
The analysed item is an arched railway bridge in Fidenza municipality, in Parma district.
The seismic vulnerability is defined as the propensity of items to undergo changes as a result of the earthquake.
This measure allows to evaluate, together with the seismic exposition and danger, the seismic vulnerability of a site.
The arched railway bridge analysed is a concrete infrastructure with five spans, with a span of 13.5 m for a total length of 80 m, with concrete spans and pylons coated with bricks.
The depressed arches have a width of 9 m, are made in masonry with a front thickness of 105 cm.
The height from the ground level to the centre of the vault is 5.5 m.
The pylons and the spans are concrete made, coated with bricks.
The river-bed is regular for the presence of a concrete platform.
Through scrupulous engineering analysis, realized with the help of exceptional analysis and modelling software, it is possible to conclude that the arched railway bridge analysed is not suitable to support seismic actions defined by NTC 2018, because it presents the minimum risk index minor to 1.00.
It is underlined that the only verification that presents risk index minus to 1.00 is the local verification of the tympanum, it means that once reinforced it, the structure will be suitable to support seismic actions defined by NTC 2018.
